Jay graduated from Evanston High School, where he lettered in tennis, cross country and basketball. He received his BS and MS degrees from Northwestern University. He earned varsity letters in tennis and gymnastics at NU. In September 1959 he began his teaching career at Hinsdale Central. He also started as a tennis pro in the summer time at Burns Field and the Hinsdale Golf Club. In 1973 he built and developed the Oak Brook Racquet and Fitness Club in Westmont. Varsity tennis teams coached by Jay have won: 13 state titles, 13 runner ups 37 conference, and 41 sectional championships. This was his 43 season as boys coach and previously was the girls assistant coach for 11 years. Jay is the founder and past president of the Illinois High School tennis coaches association. In 1989 the US government sent him to Morocco as a tennis consultant and clinician. His coaching honors include being the National High School coach of the year in 1988, National USPTA high school coach of the year in 1993, 2002 Illinois high school tennis coach of the year. Michael Kohler Americas Greatest Coaches also named him in a book. He has been a number 1 ranked senior player in the Chicago District tennis Association as well as nationally ranked in the USTA. He and his daughter Robin have also been nationally ranked in the USTA National father daughter tournaments. Robin is the assistant varsity girl s tennis coach at Hinsdale Central and also an attorney. Shawn Kramer, Jay's son, lives in Boulder, Colorado and is a Iron Man and triathlete. Jay and his wife, Jackie live in Oak Brook. |
