John Murphy ’71 is recognized for his long career as an outstanding high school, collegiate and national and international world class competitive swimmer. He was elected team captain his senior year at Hinsdale Central, and was elected co-captain his senior year at Indiana University. He is a two time world record holder, a gold medal and bronze medal winner as a member of the 1972 Olympic team, and a member of the U.S. Pan American team winning both gold and silver medals as a high school swimmer. He also competed on three U.S. World Swimming Championship teams, winning three gold medals. John graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Finance, and successfully passed the CPA exam. Today he owns a successful accounting practice in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is the proud father of one son, Shaun, who recently earned a PhD in Chemistry at Notre Dame. To give back to the swimming community that has provided him with so much success, John has coached age group swimmers as a volunteer in Santa Fe, and recently was named head coach of the Los Alamos Swim Club. |
